Welcome to my corner of the internet!
Hey, I’m Siobhan Daley.
I have cerebral palsy, which means my body rarely listens to me, or anyone else, really. I use a power chair and communication device, and I’m part cyborg. I have a Deep Brain Stimulator implanted in my brain and chest, which, yes, means I have a remote control, and yes, it can technically be used to shut me up, but then I become useless.
I’m also a writer, speaker, high-performance boccia athlete, disability advocate, technology enthusiast, and the proud Mummy of a greyhound named Winter.
This publication exists because I have things I want to say.
As you could probably tell, I don’t really have a niche. This publication is simply where all of my interests collide. One week, I might be writing about disability policy, the next, I might be talking about artificial intelligence, communication, brain surgery, boccia, accessible gaming, or whatever random thought has decided to occupy my brain for the foreseeable future. If I can’t stop thinking about something, there’s a pretty good chance it’s eventually going to end up here.
Everything I publish here is free because I want as many people as possible to be able to read it. A paid subscription doesn’t unlock articles or special features. Instead, it’s a way of supporting the work and helping make the publication itself possible.
Every essay takes a ridiculous amount of time to research, write, edit, and publish. Writing is inherently slow when you communicate through a device, but it’s also some of the most important work I do, because it gives me an opportunity to contribute to conversations that I care deeply about and hopefully introduce people to ideas they might not otherwise have encountered.
Your support gives me more time to disappear down research rabbit holes, write essays about whatever has captured my attention this week, and continue sharing the occasional opinion that probably should have stayed inside my head.
It also gives me a fighting chance of making writing one of my main priorities, which is useful because I seem to have absolutely no intention of shutting up.
Most importantly, though, it tells me that this work matters to someone other than me.
And that’s a pretty incredible thing.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for being here.
